Homebuilt Yoke Tool

10th June 2010

If you have ever tried to get the pinion yoke off  your 8 3/4 without (expensive) professional tools, you may appreciate this. I needed to replace the seal on the 51 and did not want to pull it from the car. This tool made it very simple-  I made it with two sets of holes to accomodate large and small yokes for the future. I use 1/4 fine thread valve cover studs and nuts to attach it to the yoke-this may not be necessary, but it protects your bolts from any possible damage. Bolted to the yoke, it rests against the floor pan or a block of wood if your floor pan is pretty.

on the side pictured it will hold the yoke for tightening. If you turn it around and rest it on the other side of the pan it is ready for use.

It is made from an old tire iron and a piece of 1/8 steel…..it wasn’t intended to be pretty so no comments…..

I drilled the holes and then bolted it to a spare yoke, placed the bar against the yoke and tacked it to the plate- keeping it tight against the yoke takes some stress of the fasteners and keeps the plate from bending.

The holes are drilled 5/16″ to make it easier to attach, the rest of the dimensions are below. The hole spacing is relatively critical, the curved space is for socket clearance and is enlongated to use on both size yokes.

This made the otherwise miserable job under the car easy and will allow dissasembly with out a large vise out of the car….hope it helps…
